SwimSafer Preparation Course
SwimSafer is Singapore's national water-safety and learn-to-swim programme. Most children meet it at some point, often through school. A preparation course builds the skills each stage assesses, so the test is a formality rather than a hurdle.
SwimSafer in one minute
- It is owned by Sport Singapore and was enhanced in 2018 as SwimSafer 2.0.
- There are six progressive stages. Stages 4, 5 and 6 are also called Bronze, Silver and Gold.
- Each stage combines swimming skills with water-survival and safety knowledge, and ends with an assessment.
For full stage-by-stage requirements, Swim2u keeps a detailed page on SwimSafer 2.0. This page focuses on preparing for it.
Why children struggle with SwimSafer assessments
- Distance without technique. A child who thrashes can sometimes cover a distance once, but not reliably when tired or nervous.
- Survival skills are skipped. Treading water, sculling and floating for time are less fun than strokes, so they get less practice.
- Clothed swimming. Higher stages involve swimming in clothing, which feels very different the first time.
- Test nerves. An unfamiliar assessor and pool can unsettle children who swim well in lessons.
How preparation lessons help
- Identify the current stage the child can realistically attempt.
- Practise every required skill, not only the ones the child enjoys.
- Build stamina so distances are comfortable, not borderline.
- Run a mock assessment so the real one feels familiar.
Format
SwimSafer preparation runs as part of the kids swimming course, either in a small group or 1-to-1, at the kids rate. Children who are behind school peers or approaching a school deadline often switch to 1-to-1 for a package or two. See swimming course fees.
SwimSafer is a minimum, not the finish line
Passing a stage shows a child can manage specific skills in a pool. Open water, currents and waves at the beach are a different environment. Keep supervising children near any water, even after Gold.
Prepare for a SwimSafer stage
Tell Swim2u your child's age, current stage (if any) and any test date. Swim2u will suggest group or 1-to-1 preparation.
