Kids Swimming Course in Singapore

A good children's course does two jobs: it keeps kids safe around water, and it makes them want to come back next week. Here is what a structured kids course covers and how to choose one.

Who it's for

Swim2u's kids programme covers children aged 12 and below. Toddlers aged 4 and below have a separate 30-minute programme; older children and teens join the adult course. If you are unsure whether your child is ready, read the best age to learn swimming.

What children learn

  1. Water safety and entry. Getting in and out safely, pool rules and holding the wall.
  2. Face in and bubbles. The first real milestone for most children.
  3. Floating and gliding. Front and back, then push-and-glide.
  4. Kicking and breathing. A steady kick, then coordinating breathing.
  5. Strokes. Freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke, with butterfly later for older swimmers.
  6. Distance and survival skills. Treading water, sculling and swimming longer distances, which lines up with SwimSafer stages.

Lesson format and fees

Kids lessons at Swim2u are 45 minutes, in packages of 4:

  • 1-to-1: $280 for 4 lessons.
  • Group of 2: $190 per child.
  • Group of 3 or more: $140 per child.

Siblings or friends often learn together as a pair or small group. There is also a family format where a parent and child learn together. Full rates are on the fees page.

Group or private for my child?

Confident, sociable children often thrive in a small group, where watching peers is motivating. Children who are afraid, easily distracted or behind their school peers usually do better 1-to-1 for a while. Children with additional needs may be better served by Swim2u's special needs swimming lessons, taught by an Autism Swim approved provider. See also private vs group swimming lessons.

What slows children down

  • Fear of face in water. Very common and very solvable with patience. Forcing it backfires.
  • Inconsistent attendance. School holidays and exams often break the rhythm. A short refresher helps after long gaps.
  • Tiredness. A 45-minute lesson after a long school day can be too much for some younger children. Weekend or early slots may work better.
  • Cold. Thin children get cold quickly at outdoor pools. A well-fitting swimsuit and a towel on the pool deck help.

How parents can help

  • Stay positive about water at home, including bath time.
  • Ask the coach what to practise, and practise only that, in shallow water, with you within arm's reach.
  • Do not compare with siblings or classmates in front of your child.
  • Keep going through the "plateau" stage. Kids often seem stuck just before a breakthrough.

Safety

Children should always be supervised by an adult near water, even after they can swim. Being able to swim in a pool is not the same as being safe in the sea or in open water. For Singapore's national water-safety pathway, see SwimSafer preparation.

Find a kids class

Tell Swim2u your child's age, whether they can put their face in the water, and your preferred area. Siblings can learn together.

Frequently asked questions

What age should children start swimming lessons?

Many children start structured lessons around 4 to 6, when they can follow instructions, but water familiarisation can begin much earlier. See the best age to learn swimming.

How long is a kids swimming lesson?

45 minutes at Swim2u for children 12 and below. Toddler lessons are 30 minutes.

Should my child do SwimSafer?

SwimSafer is Singapore's national water-safety programme and many schools use it, so it is worth working through. See SwimSafer preparation.

Is once a week enough for kids?

Once a week works for most children. Twice a week speeds things up, especially for beginners or before a SwimSafer test.
