Swimming Courses at Bishan Swimming Complex

A course is a series of lessons with a direction: from where the learner is now to a defined next point. This page explains how courses taught at Bishan's public pool are structured, how progress is checked, and what is realistic to expect.

Independence: SwimmingCourse.sg is an independent guide; courses are delivered by Swim2u Pte Ltd. We do not run Bishan Swimming Complex. Hours: Bishan pool visitor guide.

Step 1: starting assessment

The first session sets the starting point. The coach watches, rather than tests, a short set of skills:

  • getting in and out safely;
  • face in the water and controlled breathing out;
  • floating on the front and back, with or without support;
  • recovering to standing;
  • kicking, gliding and any strokes already learned.

The result is a plain note: "can do", "nearly", "not yet". That note is the course plan.

Step 2: choose a pathway

PathwayWho it's forTypical focus
Water confidenceToddlers, nervous beginners of any ageEntry, breathing, floating, standing up
Learn to swimChildren and adults with basic confidenceFreestyle and backstroke over short distances, treading water
Stroke developmentLearners who can swim a littleBreaststroke, breathing timing, longer distances
Water-safety skillsChildren working on SwimSafer-type skillsSurvival skills, sculling, safe entries, swimming in clothing
Technique and fitnessAdults who already swimEfficiency, endurance, a first event

These are teaching pathways, not official awards. SwimSafer is Sport Singapore's national programme; a course can practise its skills but is not automatically official registration, assessment or certification.

Step 3: course structure

  • Packages of 4 lessons: 30 minutes for babies and tots, 45 minutes for children and adults (per Swim2u pricing).
  • The same coach where possible, at a regular weekly time confirmed in advance.
  • Each lesson: warm-up of known skills, one or two new skills, repetition, short review.
  • Progress note at the end of each package.

Bishan is closed on Thursdays (except public holidays), so weekly courses there run on other days.

Step 4: review and next package

At the end of a package the coach tells you which skills moved from "not yet" to "can do", and what the next package should target. You choose whether to continue, change format or stop.

What progress is realistic?

There is no fixed number of lessons to "learn to swim". Progress depends on:

  • how the learner feels about water at the start;
  • age and coordination;
  • attendance and gaps between lessons;
  • practice between lessons;
  • health, sleep and mood on the day.

A nervous adult may spend a whole package getting comfortable with breathing and floating. A confident seven-year-old may move through two pathways in the same time. Both are normal. Swimming lessons build skills; they do not make anyone drown-proof.

Fees

Packages are priced per four lessons; see Swim2u lesson prices. Pool admission is paid separately to ActiveSG.
